Chapter 29
Chapter 29 — "The Generator"
TL;DR: Galt is moved at gunpoint to the State Science Institute and strapped into the Ferris Persuader — an electrical torture machine — but when the device shorts out under load and Ferris's mechanic cannot fix it, Galt himself, bound and bleeding, calmly tells the man how to repair the wiring; in the same hour Dagny, Francisco, Rearden, and Danneskjöld converge on the Institute and shoot their way in to extract him.

Summary: Persuasion having failed, the regime moves Galt by car to the State Science Institute facility in New Hampshire, the same building from which the smear of Rearden Metal once issued. He is strapped to the Ferris Persuader — a chair and frame of electrodes designed to administer pain in calibrated doses. Dr. Floyd Ferris operates the controls. Dr. Robert Stadler watches from the back of the room, ashen. Wesley Mouch waits for word. The torture begins. Galt gives them nothing — no cry, no plea, no answer. After several rounds the generator powering the device shorts out. The young mechanic on duty cannot find the fault. Ferris orders him to fix it. The mechanic stares at the chair and the bound man and cannot work. From the chair, Galt — bound, conscious, bleeding — calmly tells the mechanic the exact wire, the exact sequence, that will repair the machine. The mechanic flees the room. Ferris stands paralyzed by the spectacle of his torture device defended by its own victim. Outside, in the same hour, Dagny is following her own decision; Francisco and Hank Rearden have come east; Ragnar Danneskjöld has put his men ashore. The four converge on the Institute. They shoot the guards. They walk through the corridors, take Galt out of the chair, and carry him away. Stadler — who has watched all of this from the wall — slips out and runs.
Key scenes:
- A car under armored escort up a New Hampshire valley road in November cold
- The Ferris Persuader chamber — concrete walls, a chair of metal struts, electrode cables, a large gray industrial generator
- Galt strapped down; Ferris at the controls; Stadler at the wall; Mouch on a phone
- The torture sequence — silent, undescribed except for needles on a meter
- The generator failing — the meter dropping, lights flickering
- The mechanic frozen at the broken panel; Galt's calm voice from the chair telling him exactly which wire to splice
- The mechanic fleeing the room
- Outside: Dagny walking past the front gate as cover for Francisco's, Rearden's, and Danneskjöld's entrance — gunfire in the corridors
- The four reaching the chamber, taking Galt down, carrying him out; Stadler slipping away
- A waiting plane on a back-country airstrip; the rescuers and Galt lifting off
Characters present: John Galt, Dr. Floyd Ferris, Dr. Robert Stadler, Wesley Mouch, the unnamed mechanic, Dagny Taggart, Francisco d'Anconia, Hank Rearden, Ragnar Danneskjöld, the Institute's guards
Locations / settings:
- A New England country highway — pine, gray sky, armored cars
- The State Science Institute — vast modernist concrete tower in pine forest
- The Ferris Persuader chamber — bare concrete, fluorescent overhead lights, a metal chair, a gray generator with cables, a control desk
- A back-country airstrip — pine, a single plane
Visual motifs: a man strapped to a frame of electrodes in fluorescent light; a needle on a meter shivering; the bound man's calm face under sweat; four rescuers walking down a corridor of fluorescent light against guards; a pine airstrip and a single plane lifting
Emotional tone: atrocious, then surreal, then deliverance
Confidence: high — the Ferris Persuader scene and the rescue are canonical climactic beats.
