What happens

This chapter is numbered 00X. It is short. It is in a register the book has not used before: not third-person limited but something just to the side of it, as if the narration itself is now slightly inside Area X. A man — Control, perhaps a Control — walks the corridors of the Southern Reach as the building is now: walls soft and green, fluorescents replaced by some other illumination that does not require fixtures, the spider plants emerging from the carpet in colonies, the smell of rotting honey replaced by the cleaner smell of brackish water.

He carries nothing. He recognizes nothing he should recognize. He does not panic. The chapter title is Hauntings — Part Three's umbrella — and the 00X numbering is the book's deliberate erasure of the operative's identity: not chapter twenty-four, not the chapter after twenty-three, but the unknown chapter, the chapter that should not exist on the table of contents. The last lines describe the man stopping at a doorway he does not recognize and looking through. What he sees on the other side is not given. The chapter ends.
