Chapter 17
Chapter 17 — "Catastrophe at Adrian"
TL;DR: The atmospheric scoop tears the Hail Mary into a wild spin, hull breaches admit Earth-air into Rocky's ammonia atmosphere, and Rocky — exposed to oxygen — collapses, telling Grace to save both worlds before going still.

Summary: The scoop works for about a minute, then everything goes wrong. The xenonite chain catches an unanticipated thermal vortex; the chain whips, transmitting a violent shear into the Hail Mary; the ship begins to spin uncontrollably; hull plates buckle. Air systems fail. Worst of all, Rocky's xenonite sphere has cracked. Eridian biology cannot tolerate oxygen — it scorches their tissue like fire. Rocky's vents seize up, his motion blurs, and he tells Grace, in his tapped-out borrowed words, to save both Earth and Erid before he collapses, motionless, on the deck. Grace, dizzy in centrifugal forces and bleeding from his ears, has to keep the ship alive long enough to do anything for either of them.
Key scenes:
- The scoop maneuver — long gold chain whipping in atmosphere with a small white ship at the other end
- Catastrophic hull strike — debris, sparks, alarms, the centrifuge whipping out of plane
- Rocky's xenonite sphere visibly cracking, the warm orange ammonia leaking into cold air
- Rocky collapsed and motionless inside a ruptured sphere, Grace holding the deck plates as his vision tunnels
Characters present: Ryland Grace, Rocky (collapsing)
Locations / settings:
- Adrian's upper atmosphere — ochre haze, particulate, lightning
- The Hail Mary main compartment under failure cascade — sparks, untethered objects, blood-warning red lights
- The cracked xenonite sphere
Visual motifs: the long gold scoop chain whipping (cover-DNA gesture), red emergency lighting fighting through orange ammonia gas, an alien collapsed inside a glass sphere as a hard silhouette, debris and sparks streaking against the cosmic black outside the window
Emotional tone: terrifying, panicked, devastating, brave
Confidence: high — the catastrophe and Rocky's near-death from oxygen exposure are pivotal.
