Chapter 6
Chapter 6 — "Tau Ceti / Suicide Mission"
TL;DR: Grace realizes the Hail Mary is in the Tau Ceti system on a one-way mission, and that the medical comas required to survive the four-year transit have already killed two of his three crewmates.

Summary: Back in the present, Grace cross-references star fields outside the ship's instruments and confirms the location: he is in the Tau Ceti system, light-years from home. He pieces together why — Tau Ceti is the one nearby star Astrophage cannot dim, and Earth needs to know why. He realizes the Hail Mary is fueled by enormous quantities of cultivated Astrophage, the only substance dense enough in stored energy to make interstellar transit possible. Memory yields the brutal truth: the four-year journey could only be survived in a deep medical coma, and the coma itself had a survival rate that did not favor a crew of three. He looks again at the two dried, dead bodies in the medical bay and finally accepts that he is the lone survivor. The mission is one-way. He is not going home.
Key scenes:
- Grace at the navigation console with a star-map overlay, identifying Tau Ceti
- A diagram of the Hail Mary hull with massive Astrophage fuel reservoirs called out
- Grace standing alone in the medical bay, finally cataloging the dead crewmates honestly
- A flashback fragment: lying down in the medical cradle, knowing he would not wake again on Earth
Characters present: Ryland Grace, the AI/Computer, Olesya Ilyukhina (corpse), Yáo Li-Jie (corpse)
Locations / settings:
- Hail Mary control room, navigation console with star-field display
- Hail Mary medical bay (revisited with new understanding)
Visual motifs: a small lone ship rendered as a white silhouette against a deep-black star field with a single gold-tinted star (Tau Ceti), the Hail Mary's spin-drive plume as a streak of cover-style gold gesture, the hard contrast between lit consoles and the dark of the corpses' bay
Emotional tone: grim, accepting, lonely, resolute
Confidence: high — the Tau Ceti / suicide-mission realization is consistent across all summaries.
