Chapter 10 — "The Carver"

TL;DR: Darrow meets Mickey — a flamboyant, morally compromised Violet-caste Carver who treats human bodies like sculpture — and is told what is about to be done to him: bones lengthened, organs replaced, irises gilded, every Red trace burned out of his flesh.

Summary: Darrow is taken to Mickey's surgical workshop — part lab, part atelier — where rich Society customers come to have their cheekbones recut or their pets bred into novelties. Mickey is a Violet (artisan caste), narcissistic, cynical, dazzling, the best Carver alive. He examines Darrow like a sculptor examines clay and lays out the procedure: every Red feature must be erased. Bones lengthened to Gold height; muscle structure rebuilt; skin re-pigmented; the red eyes burned and replaced with gold; teeth re-aligned; even reflexes neurologically retrained. He warns Darrow, half-bored, half-curious, that the carving will be the worst pain a human body can take and remain alive. Darrow agrees. The horror of consenting to one's own erasure is the chapter's emotional core: to fight the Society he must become indistinguishable from it. The Sons of Ares bind him to the operating table; Mickey lifts a scalpel; the chapter ends on the sound of the first cut.
