Chapter 18

Chapter 18 — "Classmates"

TL;DR: Darrow meets his House Mars peers — Cassius, Roque, Quinn, Antonia, Titus, the impish Sevro, and the bear-massive Pax — and reads each one in moments, the political map of the Institute snapping into place.

Summary: The Mars cohort gathers in their assigned chambers before the year's first contest. Darrow is introduced to a cast he will live or die beside: Cassius au Bellona, golden, charismatic, the natural prince; Roque au Fabii, the soft-spoken poet-strategist; Quinn, his witty foil; Antonia au Severus-Julii, beautiful and sociopathic; Titus au Ladros, brutish and ambitious; the imp-grinned, scarred Sevro au Barca, who immediately punctures every pretension in the room; and Pax th'Telemanus, a literal giant, fourteen feet of Olympian-bred muscle. Darrow's Andromedus cover holds. He befriends Cassius almost without trying — the two of them discover a shared love of books, of dueling, of laughter. He clocks Antonia and Titus as future enemies. Sevro he cannot read, which immediately makes Sevro the most interesting person in the room.

Key scenes:

  • The House Mars common room — long oak table, a fire, weapons-rack of practice razors.
  • A round of introductions, each a small character beat: Cassius's grin, Roque's quiet, Antonia's smile that does not reach her eyes, Sevro's mocking silence.
  • Pax th'Telemanus ducking through a doorway built for a Gold; the laugh that follows.
  • A first private moment where Cassius and Darrow find each other — a quote of Ovid, a shared joke.

Characters present: Darrow, Cassius, Roque, Quinn, Antonia, Titus, Sevro, Pax, Fitchner, other House Mars Golds (background).

Locations / settings:

  • House Mars common room at the Institute — stone walls, raftered ceiling, oak long-table, weapons rack, hearth, banners of the wolf-and-spear Mars sigil.

Visual motifs: the wolf-and-spear of Mars on banners and breastplates; the weapons rack of practice razors; gold-eyes around an oak table catching firelight; Pax th'Telemanus's silhouette dwarfing the others; Sevro's dirty grin and small wiry frame; Antonia's perfect, unreadable smile.

Emotional tone: social-chess, watchful, with sparks of real warmth (Cassius).

Confidence: high — character introductions are widely covered.
