Chapter 36
Chapter 36 — "A Second Test"
TL;DR: Darrow drills his Oathbreaker army through a brutal winter retraining — small unit tactics, asymmetric movement, no banners — turning a ragged camp into a strike force the Houses cannot read on a map.

Summary: Winter in the Northwoods is the Oathbreakers' forge. Darrow runs his army through a weeks-long second-test of his own design — small unit tactics, fire-and-fade ambush drills, night marches, blackout signals, and explicit unlearning of the formal Gold conventions every cohort member was raised on. The army has no House banner, no fixed castle, no fixed line of battle. They train to vanish, to sprint, to be three places by dawn, to ignore the rules of duel and ransom that the Society is built on. Sevro's solo-recon style scales: he becomes Darrow's master of the cohort's eyes. Mustang teaches counter-strategy — how the Houses expect the wildlands to fight, and how to invert it. Roque architects supply lines. By chapter's end the Oathbreakers are no longer a refugee column. They are the Institute's first true insurgency, and the title is honest: this is the second, real Institute test, the one Darrow set himself.
Key scenes:
- A frozen lake training ground — squad drills in winter dawn-light.
- Sevro coaching scouts in a snow-buried gulch, a wolf-pelt at his shoulders.
- Mustang at a chalkboard mapping rival House doctrine and how to counter it.
- A nighttime march across pine country — silent column, no torches, no flag.
- Darrow on a rocky outcrop at first light, surveying a column that no Society manual has a name for.
Characters present: Darrow, Mustang, Sevro, Roque, the Oathbreaker army.
Locations / settings:
- Northwoods training ground — frozen lake, pine forest, snow-buried gulch.
- A rocky outcrop above the camp — Darrow's vantage.
Visual motifs: snow-dawn, breath fog, no banner; black-clad figures vanishing into pine; wolf-pelt-shouldered Sevro; Mustang at a frost-stained chalkboard; Darrow on a rocky outcrop, beard grown, a Reaper silhouette.
Emotional tone: disciplined cold, controlled hunger, the patient assembly of a weapon.
Confidence: medium-high — training-arc beat clear in recap sources; specific drill scenes interpolated.
