Chapter 40
Chapter 40 — "Paradigm"
TL;DR: Mustang reveals that the Jackal is her twin and that she has, against her father's expectations, chosen Darrow's side — and Darrow accepts the alliance knowing she has just made herself the Society's most valuable defector.

Summary: A turning-point conversation, almost entirely two-handed. Mustang, on a windy bluff above the Oathbreaker camp, finally tells Darrow what she has been holding back: she is Virginia au Augustus, daughter of Nero au Augustus the ArchGovernor of Mars, twin of the Jackal. Her presence in the wildlands has not been accidental and has not been ideological — until now. She has spent the year studying her brother's politics, her father's politics, and the Society's politics, and she has decided. She is going to stand with Darrow. The decision means more than she yet knows: in joining Darrow she has made herself the Society's most valuable runaway and her father's most punishable child. Darrow accepts with the carefulness due an offer this large. The chapter title is exact: a paradigm shifts. The remainder of the novel is not Andromedus's victory in a Gold game; it is a Society heir publicly defecting to a House-less army that may or may not be commanded by a Red.
