One-sentence summary: With Gratas dead, Dobrev returned, the satellite gone, the whales scattered, and the Nazi-gold leverage proven hollow, the Convocation collapses; Charlie is exonerated and Mathilda begins to wind down what was always meant to be wound down.

Paragraph summary

The Convocation's collapse is, like every other formal beat in the book, mostly paperwork. Dobrev, alive again, resumes a chair he never actually vacated; the assembled membership, deprived of leadership, leverage, and momentum, is given the choice between dignified dissolution and inelegant prosecution. Most choose dignified dissolution. Charlie is exonerated of Dobrev's "murder" and the destruction of the Grand Bellagio Hotel through a series of carefully placed clarifications that arrive in the right inboxes; the federal frame from the bombing in Barrington is similarly walked back. Mathilda, with Jake's plan now executed, begins to dismantle the operation she has run for years — staffing wound down, assets dispersed, the lair quietly mothballed. The dolphins are formally retired with a fair settlement. The cats are offered the same option, and accept.

Key scenes

  • A short, decisive Convocation session — chaired by Dobrev, members thinned
  • A montage of paperwork — quiet rooms, sealed envelopes, a federal frame walked back
  • Mathilda walking the lair's corridors with a clipboard, marking rooms for closure
  • A staff farewell at the lagoon — translator rigs returned, dolphins dispersing
  • Hera and Persephone in Jake's old chair — final formal photograph, in effect

Calm. A long con concluding. The book's least dramatic chapter and one of its best.

Confidence

High for the dismantling beats and the cats' retirement. Medium for staging.
