Role: Middle Curtis brother (16); high-spirited greaser and school dropout who works at the DX; the easygoing mediator holding the Curtis household together.

Personality / energy: Sunny, affectionate, and magnetic—“movie-star” handsome with a reckless grin, he’s the brother who can get “drunk on just plain living.” Quick to laugh, quick to comfort, he diffuses tension between Darry and Ponyboy and hates conflict in the house. Loyal to his friends, romantic and soft-hearted (especially about Sandy and about horses); when cornered by family strain, his cheer cracks and he bolts rather than lash out.
