What happens

Atticus moves the conversation outside to spare Boo Radley the lamps. On the porch he and Heck Tate disagree about what officially happened. Atticus — who believes in the law and who believes Jem stabbed Ewell — wants the truth told to a coroner's jury. He wants his son cleared on self-defense by due process, not protected from it. Heck Tate refuses. "Bob Ewell fell on his knife," he says — flat, twice, three times. He explains: it was Boo, not Jem, who killed Ewell. To drag a shy, broken man into a courthouse for the rest of Maycomb to gawk at, after he saved two children, would be — Heck pauses for the word — "a sin."

Atticus, after a long quiet, accepts the framing. Scout, watching from the porch railing, looks up at her father and says: "Mr. Finch... it'd be sort of like shootin' a mockingbird, wouldn't it?" Atticus's face changes. Inside, on the porch swing, Boo Radley sits, hands in his lap, beside Scout, his eyes on Jem through the open window.

He has worked out what justice requires when the law would require something worse — and he does not move. Atticus, the book's lifelong defender of due process, gives in. The book treats it as the right call without quite saying so out loud, but it makes the case carefully: Scout's quiet "shootin' a mockingbird" is the chapter's bridge.

Scout, in three sentences on a porch railing, demonstrates that she has fully absorbed Atticus's Chapter 10 rule — twenty chapters after he stated it once and never repeated it. The chapter is, in many ways, the book's quietest test of whether the children have actually been taught what the book has been telling us they have been taught.

Why it matters

This is the chapter where the book's most disputed moment happens. Atticus, who believes in the law, agrees to a lie. The book frames the lie as a kindness — the alternative would be to drag a shy, broken man through public attention he could not survive — but it is a lie, and Atticus's earlier statements about due process do not get reconciled with it inside the book. Readers have been arguing about Chapter 30 for half a century. The book itself does not resolve the argument; it stages it, lets Heck win, and moves on.
