Chapter 23
TL;DR: Jimmy's magic flickers back on mid-pendulum-swing. He stops the trap, frees the other three from their straps, and stands at the lip of the void pit with the gold pixel sword in one hand and the cool-cyan orb-glow in the other.
Spoilers through Chapter 23.
Chapter in one sentence
The rescue lands on the wizard Todd cast as bait, and the bait turns out to be the wizard the rescue needs.
What happens
The platform is a single tile from the lip of the pit when the patch lands. Jimmy feels it first — the file responds, the orb that should be at the top of his apprentice staff is suddenly there as a single bluer-white pixel, the gold pixel sword catches a one-pixel highlight in the chamber's dim torchlit air. He stops the pendulum mid-swing with a single Repository edit; the blade hangs in the air, an offending object the game cannot now drop.
He frees Phillip first. Tyler and Gary second. He stands at the lip of the void pit with the platform now still. The four wizards are alive. Todd is at the control ledge, smiling in the cyan UI overlay — his game is not lost yet, he has the NPC controller.
Key moments
- The patch landing. Jimmy's first orb-pixel.
- The pendulum stopping. The blade hangs.
- Phillip freed first. The book makes the order matter.
- Jimmy at the lip of the pit. Gold pixel sword, cool-cyan orb-glow.
- Todd's smile in the cyan UI overlay. The chapter does not let the rescue settle.
Character shifts
Jimmy uses the magic the way a friend would use it. The book gives him the win — first save, first orb-glow, first stop — and does not undercut him. Phillip is freed first; the book lets the audience read the choice.
Why it matters
The chapter is the rescue's release of pressure and the book's first evidence in twenty-three chapters that Jimmy will choose well when the choice is real. The next chapter's possessed-friends brawl is the test of whether the choice holds.
Themes to notice
- The save that lands on the wizard nobody trusted.
- The orb-glow as identity restored.
- The rescue that does not end the chapter.
Book club questions
- Jimmy frees Phillip first. The book makes the order matter. Why this order?
- Jimmy's orb-glow is cool-cyan, not warm-white. The book gives him a slightly different magic signature. What is the book saying with the color?
- Todd is smiling in the UI overlay at the chapter end. The book does not let the rescue feel complete. Is the deferral effective?
Visual memory hook
A platform a single tile from the lip of a black void pit. A huge metallic pendulum blade hanging motionless in mid-swing. Jimmy at the platform's edge with the gold pixel sword in one hand and a cool-cyan orb-glow in the other. Phillip, Tyler, Gary standing free. A cyan UI text-box at the control ledge with Todd's smile inside it.
What's next
Todd weaponizes the game's NPC controller. The party's previously-friendly NPCs come for them.
