TL;DR: A sharp, observant village girl who figures out, correctly, that the "wizards" of Leadchurch are the source of the dragons attacking her village — and then assembles a quiet coalition (a magical artifact, a loyal dog, an alliance with the local brigand chief) to make them answer for it. The first ordinary-person antagonist the series has ever taken seriously, and the character who wins.

Snapshot

A village child, maybe ten to thirteen years old, the kind of kid who reads adults like maps. Quiet, watchful, righteously angry, never theatrical. The book's quotes page attributes a specific narrative beat to her: she has a tendency to nod when adults are talking, and the adults read the nod as agreement. It is, every time, the moment before she does something they would not have approved of. By the end she has out-thought the wizards, outlasted Kludge's skepticism, and dictated the terms of her own peace.

Role in the story

Honor is the book's true antagonist and emerges almost halfway in — first off-page in chapter twelve (Kludge's hideout from her side), then on-page in chapter thirteen (her cottage loft, the artifact unwrapped). From there she runs in parallel with the wizards' field operations. She approaches a dragon with a basket of warm scones in chapter fourteen and proves it can be calmed without spectacle. She brings Kludge into her plan in chapter eighteen. She ambushes a wizard pair in chapter twenty-one and produces the book's first clear wizard defeat. She watches the fake-demon ceremony in chapter twenty-three and clocks every tell. She confronts the wizards publicly on the village green in chapter twenty-five. She accepts the staged public defeat in chapter twenty-six as the wizards' down payment. She dictates the terms of the silver-compensation truce in chapter twenty-seven. She watches the wizards close the book from a hedgerow in chapter twenty-eight, hood up, the iron pendant under her cloak.

Her arc is not redemption. She is not wrong. The wizards are not redeemed by accepting her terms; they are corrected. The book lets her win, on her terms, and the wizards' final relief is undercut by the visible fact that she is the one who set those terms.

Personality in plain English

Quiet. Watchful. Patient in a way most adults aren't. She listens more than she talks; when she talks, it is to set terms or ask a question whose answer she already knows. She is not cute, and the book does not patronize her. She negotiates with the brigand Kludge as a peer. She negotiates with Phillip as a peer. The pendant glows when she channels it; the rest of the time she carries it the way a tradesman carries a tool. Her worst habit is the one most of her allies share — keeping her cards too close, which costs her information she could have used earlier. Her best is that she does not fold, ever, on the terms that actually matter.

What she wants

Restitution for her village. Acknowledgment that the wizards caused the damage. A future in which the wizards no longer pretend to be Britain's only authority over what happens in her countryside. Specifically, by chapter twenty-seven: monthly silver, paid in real coin, on a fixed schedule, left in a place of her choosing, with no magical catches and no visits to her family.

What she fears

That the wizards' deception will work. That nobody will believe a thirteen-year-old village girl over a credentialed bishop and a fraternity of robed men. That the artifact she has learned to wield is unstable and might not work at the moment she needs it. None of these fears is realized in the book; the book lets her be right about her judgment as often as she's right about her facts.

Pre-teen to early-teen village girl, light skin tone, long thick dark-brown hair worn in a single braid that falls over the left shoulder and ends just above the belt. Dark eyes — the book gives her a specific look, the one where adults misread her stillness as agreement. A small soot smudge on the right cheekbone is a recurring detail. She wears a brown roughspun ankle-length tunic with a slightly darker brown skirt, mended at the left elbow with a gray patch. A cream linen undertunic is visible at the collar and sleeves. Brown leather belt with a small leather pouch holding the scones. Worn brown leather ankle boots, one slightly loose lace. A dark-iron pendant on a leather cord at her throat — the magical artifact — which emits a subtle terminal-green glow when she actively channels it.
