Chapter 15
Chapter 15 — "Legacy — Write Your Legacy"
TL;DR: When a new All Black joins the squad he is given a small black leather book — its first hundred pages full of his predecessors' contributions, the rest blank. His job is to write the next pages.

Summary: The closing chapter consolidates the previous fourteen into a single artifact: the Black Book. Each new All Black, on selection, is presented with a small leather-bound notebook — its early pages dense with handwritten entries from generations of past players (their thoughts on what wearing the jersey meant, what they wished they'd known, what they ask of those who follow); the remaining pages blank, waiting for the recipient's own contribution. Kerr describes this as the most affecting moment in the entire All Blacks induction, and uses it to fold every prior chapter together: character (the act of writing humbly), purpose (asking what is my contribution), responsibility (you are now accountable to the names in front and behind), authenticity (write the truth, not the press-release), legacy (leave the pages better than you found them). The chapter closes the book with a direct second-person turn: what would your Black Book say? The defining visual is the small leather book itself, closed, on a slate plinth, with a single ribbon marking the page between the past and the blank.
Key scenes:
- A small leather-bound notebook closed on a slate plinth, single rim-light, monochrome — the chapter's hero image
- The same book open mid-spread: dense handwritten ink on the left page, blank on the right
- A junior squad member receiving the book in cupped hands from a senior, a single lamp illuminating the exchange
- A wide closing tableau of an empty stadium at dusk, the floodlights cooling — the book of one's career, closing
Characters present: Graham Henry presenting the book in a composite scene, an anonymous junior recipient, the squad as background witnesses, James Kerr (narrator), and the implicit Reader (the chapter's direct addressee)
Locations / settings:
- A team room with a slate plinth and a single overhead spot
- A close-cropped book-spread shot — left page covered in ink, right page blank
- A presentation moment in a darkened locker room, two pairs of hands cupped around the book
- An empty post-match stadium at dusk — floodlights dimming
Visual motifs: a small black leather notebook closed on a stone plinth; the same notebook open across two pages — one full, one blank; a ribbon bookmark between past and future; cupped hands cradling a book in raking light
Emotional tone: valedictory, intimate, inviting, time-aware
Confidence: high — the Black Book ritual and the closing "write your legacy" prompt are the most-quoted features of the book's final chapter.
