One-sentence summary: Gratas attacks the island — assets in the air and beneath the water — and Charlie answers in kind, destroying a Convocation spy satellite with the orbital weapon Jake left him.

Paragraph summary

The Convocation moves first. Surveillance drones overhead, a probing approach by submersibles in the surf, an aggressive radio posture from a Convocation spy satellite hanging quietly in low orbit. Mathilda walks Charlie through the response options. The lair's orbital platform — Jake's space laser — is one of them. Charlie, who at the start of the book could not pay his credit card, gives the order. The satellite is destroyed in a single quiet line of light. The disruption blacks out the Convocation's overhead picture and severs the comms link to the genetically-enhanced whales the cabal had been steering toward the island. The first real action set-piece in the book; played with the same dry restraint as everything else.

Key scenes

  • The control room — geothermal underglow, screen wall, Charlie's face in cold blue
  • Mathilda laying the options out — drones / surface intercepts / orbital
  • Charlie's "do it" — the smallest possible go-order
  • An external shot — a thin line of light against night-orbit, satellite gone
  • A muted alarm cut suddenly to silence as enemy comms drop

Characters referenced

Locations / settings

  • The lair's main control room — screen wall, brass fittings, geothermal-glow underlighting
  • Brief external low-orbit shot — black, deep-blue, a distant satellite, a single line of light

Visual motifs

  • A wall of muted screens, the only colored light in a warm-dark room
  • Charlie's face lit by cold blue from a single screen
  • A satellite alone against starfield, then a thin line, then nothing
  • Two cats on a console, watching screens like junior staff

Atmosphere

Quiet, weighted, an order being given by a man still surprised he is the one giving orders.

Confidence

High for the satellite-destroyed-with-space-laser beat. Medium for staging.
