Paragraph summary

The Convocation's underwater assault group — a small pod of genetically enhanced whales, briefed and steered by handlers — converges on the island. With overhead surveillance dark, the whales lose their coordination signal and arrive at the lagoon disorganized. The dolphins, who in the previous chapter accepted a labor settlement on terms favorable to themselves, mobilize on their own initiative — and meet the whales in deep water beyond the reef. The chapter is set partly above the surface (the lair's observation balcony, a control room overlay, the lagoon at noon) and partly in implication beneath it (sonar pings, breaching backs, white water). The whales are dispersed; the worst of the assault is broken; the dolphins lose nobody. Above the surface, Mathilda quietly removes a piece from a tactical map.
