Spoilers through Chapter 14.

Chapter in one sentence

The tracker jacker nest scatters the Careers, Katniss finally gets her bow, and Peeta reveals where his loyalty truly lies.

What happens

At dawn, with the anthem masking the noise, Katniss saws through the last of the branch and the tracker jacker nest crashes down onto the sleeping Career pack. The maddened wasps swarm; the tributes scatter screaming for the lake, and Glimmer and another girl are stung to death.

Katniss herself takes several stings and feels the venom's hallucinations beginning to bloom. Forcing herself down to Glimmer's body, she pries loose the coveted bow and sheath of arrows — finally armed with her true weapon.

As Cato returns, Peeta appears and screams at the dazed Katniss to run — driving her away and saving her life, even as it reveals that his loyalty was never really with the Careers. Katniss flees deeper into the woods, mind splintering with venom-born visions, until she collapses.

Book club questions

  1. Peeta risks everything to save Katniss. Does this resolve the question of his loyalty, or deepen it?
  2. Katniss gets her bow from a dead girl's swollen body. How does the book keep even her wins ugly?
  3. The venom hallucinations blur what's real. Why might the book want Katniss — and us — disoriented here?
